Tips to visit ethnic minority villages

Visiting ethnic minority villages is one of the most interesting activities of foreigners when travelling in Sapa. However, if not the following advice below, you may be not welcomed by the host.

Visit in a small group

The tourists, especially foreigners like to explore the culture and lifestyle of the ethnic minority groups by visiting their villages. However, it is advised to visit the minority villages in a small group, ideally four people or less because this will be more convenient for you to communicate more with villagers. Most of them are welcoming and hospitable to visitors.

Be sensitive

Each ethnic minority group has its own habits and customs. The behaviours that we take for granted may annoy some ethnic minority people; remember you are a guest. Apart from being sensitive to every situation, the following simple rules should be strictly obeyed when you visit the ethnic minority groups.

Dress conservatively, long trousers or a skirt and T-shirt are recommended.

Shooting

Ask permission from ethnic minority people whenever you intend to take a photograph of them or their houses, particularly of the old people who are not very confident with the camera.

 When entering their house

Only go inside a house when you are invited and remember to leave your shoes at the door before entering.

Gift offer

Small gifts, such as fresh fruits are always welcome. However, there is a view that you should only ever give in return for some service or as a response for hospitality, a compromise is to buy craftworks produced by the villagers. Most ethnic minority groups have some embroideries, textiles or baskets for sale.

 Learn some basic dialects

As a way to pay your respect, you should learn the local languages. This will help you get closer to the native people.

Environment protection

The ethnic minority people love nature because they think that it protects them and gives them food to live. Therefore, do not damage natural resources and try to minimize your influence on the environment. If not, you will be asked to get out of their area.

Drug is prohibited

Growing and using the drug is illegal in Vietnam that may be punished with a fine or prison sentence. Do not drag you into trouble by buying or using it.
