Vietnam visa exemption for 24 countries: 45 days
The Vietnam visa exemption for 45 days covers 24 countries under two resolutions, with stays counted from your date of entry. Resolution 44/NQ-CP covers any purpose; Resolution 229/NQ-CP covers tourism.

Bilateral exemptions: 14 to 90 days
Fifteen countries have bilateral agreements with Vietnam that cover ordinary passports, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' visa exemption list published on 30 June 2025. The stay depends on the country.

Phu Quoc: visa-free for any nationality
Phu Quoc island has its own rule: travelers of any nationality who arrive directly and stay on the island can visit for up to 30 days without a visa. Traveling on to the mainland needs a visa.

When your trip is longer than your visa-free days
When your trip runs past your visa-free days, apply for an e-visa before you travel. The e-visa covers stays of up to 90 days, with single or multiple entries, and works at airports, land border gates and seaports.
Plan for the full trip rather than an extension once you are in Vietnam. A UK traveler staying 60 days, a Thai traveler staying 45 days or a Filipino traveler staying 25 days each needs an e-visa. Latest changes to the Vietnam visa free countries 2026 list
This log lists the changes behind the current lists, newest first.
- 15 August 2025: Resolution 229/NQ-CP adds 12 European countries for tourism, 45 days, until 14 August 2028.
- 30 June 2025: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs publishes its updated visa exemption list, including the bilateral agreements above.
- 15 March 2025: Resolution 44/NQ-CP renews 45 days for 12 countries, until 14 March 2028.
As of 11 October 2026, we found no newer resolution changing these lists. Since April 2026, Vietnam has also run a free online pre-arrival declaration at major airports; it is not a visa and does not change who is exempt.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Vietnam visa-free for US citizens?
No. The United States is not on either 45-day list or the bilateral list, so US citizens need a visa for every trip. The same applies to Australia, Canada, India, Ireland and New Zealand. Most of these travelers apply for an e-visa of up to 90 days.
Can I extend a visa-free stay in Vietnam?
Plan not to. If your trip may run past your visa-free days, apply for an e-visa that covers the whole stay before you travel. Overstaying is an immigration offense, and an extension inside Vietnam is not something to count on.
Do children need a visa if their passport is visa-exempt?
No. The exemption follows the passport, so a child with their own passport from an exempt country is covered for the same number of days. A child on a non-exempt passport needs their own e-visa. Our page on children and groups covers family trips.
When do the 45-day exemptions end?
Resolution 44/NQ-CP runs until 14 March 2028 and Resolution 229/NQ-CP until 14 August 2028. The government can renew, change or end them, so check this page before trips booked close to those dates.
