Everyone knows that Vietnam experienced a long time to fight against the very strong invaders. Therefore, there is no strange when Vietnam still remains a lot of war prisons. The following are 8 most-outstanding war prisons in Vietnam.

Son La prison

Son La prison was built in 1908 by French to constrain communists who afterwards became leaders of Vietnamese revolution such as Le Duan, Truong Chinh, Van Tien Dung, Xuan Thuy, Tran Huy Lieu, Tran Quoc Hoan, Hoang Tung, To Hieu…

The prison is situated on Khau Ca hill, group 9, To Hieu ward, Son La city. This vestige welcomes the arrivals of dozens of thousands of tourists and researchers. Visiting the prison, tourists will understand to some extent severe tortures as well as the strong will of Vietnamese soldiers.

Hoa Lo prison


Hoa Lo prison was built since 1896 at Hanoi’s center, headquarter of colonial government at that time. Many Vietnamese generations were detained in Hoa Lo prision including patriotic confucians such as Phan Boi Chau, Luong Van Can, Duong Ba Trac and communists like Nguyen Van cu, Truong Chinh, Le Duan, Nguyen Van Linh, Do Muoi…

Ho Lo relic still remains intact with a lot of valuable documents and objects, particularly the old French guillotine. The prison opens almost every day of the week except for Monday.

Vinh prison


Vinh prison was construct in 1804 in territory of Nghe An ancient citadel. During French colonial empire, Vinh prison was used to imprison those who opposed feudal and colonial systems throught Van Than, Can Vuong movements with uprisings of Tran Tan, Dang Nhu Mai, Phan Dinh Phung, Nguyen Xuan On-Le Doan Nha, Duy Tan movement, Trung Ky anti-tax movement, Dong Du movement…

Plenty of French torture tools for Vietnamese patriotic soldiers and revolutionists are displayed at Vinh prison.

Thua Phu prison


Thua Phu prison was formerly the residence of the marines under Nguyen dynasty and then served as the main prison of Thua Thien Hue in 1899. The prison held General Vo Nguyen Giap and his lover Ms Nguyen Thi Quang Thai with professors: Dang Thai Mai, Le Viet Luong… in the revolutionary high tide of Nghe Tinh Soviet revolt in early October 1930.

This place is associated with revolutionary activities of General Vo Nguyen Giap. Coming here, tourists will understand to some extent fortitude of the eldest brother of the Vietnam People’s Army. The prison is located at No.1, Le Lai Street, Vinh Ninh ward, Hue city.

Lao Bao prison


Built in 1908, Lao Bao prison is one of the largest French prisons in Indochina that kept important revolutionists such as To Huu, Nguyen Chi Thanh, Tran Van Cung, Le Chuong, Le The Tiet…

Lao Bao prison is located at the end of Le The Tiet street, Lao Bao town, Huong Hoa district.

Buon Ma Thuot prison


Built in the years of 1930-1931, Buon Ma Thuot prison constrained patriotic soldiers such as VO Chi Cong, Phan Dang Luu, Ho Tung Mau, Nguyen Chi Thanh, To Huu. The prison is currently situated at No.18, Tan Thuat street, Tu An wrd, Buon Ma Thuot city.

After several times of restoration, Buon Ma Thuot prison was opened to the public with the aim of introducing a severe period of Vietnamese revolutionists.

Con Dao prison


Con Dao prison is a system of prisons in Con Dao built by French colonist in 1862. This place was compared to hell on earth with savage tortures of which tiger cage is the foremost devilry.

Con Dao prison was listed as one of 23 special national relics. It is not only a tourist attraction but also a reminder of Vietnamese veterans.

Phu Quoc prison


Located in Coconut Tree village, An Thoi commune, Phu Quoc island, Phu Quoc prison is the center bastille of the South before the country united. Phu Quoc historical vetige is not very large situated at the main area of old prison including 2-storey building for exhibits and an outdoor section displaying original objects.
