Please inform that American citizens can not enter Vietnam without preparing a visa beforehand. In your case, you should go directly to the Vietnam Embassy/Consulate to obtain a visa.

The required documents that you have to submit include: a valid origin passport photo with one blank page left, 2 passport photos taken less than one year ago, an application form (available at the embassy) and Vietnam visa fee. Please take note that the processing time and visa fee vary among the embassies. Therefore, you have to contact directly to the embassy where you are applying to get specific information.
