The rules below are as of October 2026. Taipei is one hour ahead of Vietnam all year, so a 17:30 cut-off in Hanoi is 18:30 in Taipei or Kaohsiung.

Do Taiwanese need a visa for Vietnam?
Yes. As of October 2026, Taiwan passports do not appear on the visa exemption list of Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, so Taiwanese travelers need a visa for tourism, business or family visits.

A Vietnam e-visa for Taiwanese travelers works at airports, land border gates and seaports, and it has been open to every country and territory since August 2023. Visa on arrival works only for flights into the main airports and needs cash at the counter.

Processing time in Taipei time

Documents for a Taiwan passport
Taiwanese travelers applying for an e-visa need the following:
- Passport: valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date, with blank pages for entry and exit stamps.
- Passport scan: the full photo page, including the two lines of letters and numbers at the bottom.
- Photo: 4x6 cm, white background, no glasses. A Taiwan passport photo is a different size, so crop or retake it.
- Trip details: your arrival date and the airport or border gate where you will enter.
You upload the scan and photo after paying. You do not need a bank statement or a copy of your card. Type your name exactly as it appears in Latin letters on the photo page.

Vietnam's representative office in Taiwan
Vietnam has no embassy in Taiwan. The Vietnam Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei handles visas in passports and consular matters instead. Taiwanese travelers need it mainly for work visas, long stays and the 5-year exemption certificate described below, because tourist and business e-visas are issued online.

Three points come up most with Taiwanese travelers: the old 30-day e-visa rule, the separate route for Taiwanese-Vietnamese families, and what to check before departure.
The 30-day e-visa is old news
News reports from 2023 describe a 30-day e-visa, but the limit has been 90 days since 15 August 2023 under Law No. 23/2023/QH15. Choose dates that cover your whole trip, since the e-visa cannot be stretched once issued.
Taiwanese-Vietnamese families
A Taiwanese spouse or child of a Vietnamese citizen can get a visa exemption certificate valid for up to 5 years, under Decree 82/2015/ND-CP (Vietnamese government's news site). You apply through the office in Taipei with proof of the family relationship. For a single visit, an e-visa is usually quicker.
