Ha Long Bay Travel Guide: Choosing Your Bay, Cruise and Season

Ha Long Bay travel guide: Ha Long vs Lan Ha vs Bai Tu Long, day trip or overnight cruise, best months, getting there and what to ask before you book.

How to apply Vietnam evisa

This Ha Long Bay travel guide comes down to three choices: which part of the bay to visit, whether to stay overnight on a boat, and when to go. From our Vietnam travel blog, it compares Ha Long, Lan Ha and Bai Tu Long bays, explains day trips versus cruises, lists what to ask before booking and covers getting there from Hanoi.

Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of limestone islands in the Gulf of Tonkin, about 2.5 hours by road from Hanoi. Most visitors fly into Hanoi first; if you need a visa, apply for a Vietnam e-visa online before you book the cruise.

Ha Long Bay at a glance:

Topic What to know
Best months March to May and September to November
Storm risk Highest from June to September
Best trip length One night on board
From Hanoi About 2.5 hours by expressway
Nearest airports Van Don (international), Cat Bi in Hai Phong, Noi Bai in Hanoi

Ha Long, Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long Bay

The three bays sit side by side and look alike, so the choice is about crowds and activities. Ha Long has the famous caves and the most boats, Lan Ha is best for kayaking and swimming, and Bai Tu Long is the quietest.

Bay Best for Departs from Busy?
Ha Long Bay First visits, big caves Tuan Chau or Ha Long cruise port Busiest
Lan Ha Bay Kayaking, swimming, Cat Ba Hai Phong or Cat Ba Moderate
Bai Tu Long Bay Quiet scenery, fewer boats Ha Long, Van Don Quietest

UNESCO extended the World Heritage listing in 2023 to cover the Cat Ba archipelago, which includes Lan Ha Bay. All three bays show the same karst landscape.

Day trip or overnight Ha Long Bay cruise

An overnight Ha Long Bay cruise is better than a day trip for most visitors. You see the bay at sunset and dawn, after day boats leave, and the five hours of driving from Hanoi are spread over two days.

A day trip from Hanoi gives you about four hours on the water, usually with a cave visit and a short kayak. It works if you only have one day. Two-night cruises reach further into Bai Tu Long or Lan Ha and add a quieter second day. Cruises range from simple wooden boats to large modern ships, and prices vary widely with the cabin and season.

What to ask before you book

Cruise listings look similar, so a few direct questions separate them. Ask the operator before you pay:

  • Route: Which bay and which stops, and how much time is spent at the busiest caves?
  • Transfer: Is the bus from Hanoi included, and from which pier does the boat leave?
  • Weather policy: What happens if the authorities suspend sailings because of a storm: a refund, a new date or a land tour?
  • Group size: How many cabins does the boat have, and is kayaking included or extra?
  • Drinks: Are drinks included, or charged on board?

Best time to visit Ha Long Bay

March to May and September to November are the best times to visit Ha Long Bay, with mild weather and clearer views. Winter, from December to February, is cool and often misty, which suits photographers but not swimmers.

June to September is hot and humid, with the highest risk of typhoons. When a storm approaches, the authorities suspend sailings, sometimes until the storm has passed, as they did during Typhoon Yagi in September 2024. In those months, keep a spare day in Hanoi and book a cruise with a clear rescheduling policy.

Getting from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay

The drive from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay is about 2.5 hours on the expressway. Most cruises include a shuttle bus from the Old Quarter; otherwise use a private car or a public bus to Ha Long.

Ha Long Bay boats leave from the harbor on Tuan Chau island or the Ha Long International Cruise Port. Lan Ha cruises often leave from Hai Phong or Cat Ba. If you are staying in Hanoi first, our Hanoi guide covers the city days. Two extras are worth knowing before you book: islands you can add, and flying in closer to the bay.

Ha Long Bay travel guide extras

Ha Long Bay connects to islands and an airport that most cruise sites do not mention. Both can change how you plan the trip.

Islands to add

Cat Ba is the largest island in the area, with a national park, beaches and easy access to Lan Ha Bay; our Cat Ba Island guide explains how to stay there. Further northeast, the quiet beaches of Co To island are reached by speedboat from Van Don.

Flying in via Van Don

Van Don International Airport is about an hour from Ha Long city and is one of the 17 airports where the Vietnam e-visa is accepted, as our list of e-visa airports shows. International flights there are limited, so check routes before you plan around it.

VietnamVisa-Easy.com is a private visa service operated by H2 Global Travel JSC since 2012, not a government website, and you can apply directly at evisa.gov.vn for US$25. If you would like your details checked before submission, start your application with us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ha Long Bay worth visiting?

Yes. Ha Long Bay is worth visiting for its thousands of limestone islands, which are unlike anywhere else in Vietnam. The main routes are busy with boats, so stay overnight or choose Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long Bay if you want a quieter experience with more time on the water.

Can you swim in Ha Long Bay?

You can swim at designated beaches and stops on most cruises, such as Ti Top island in Ha Long Bay or quiet coves in Lan Ha Bay. Swimming off the boat depends on the operator and local rules. The water is warmest from May to October.

Is Ha Long Bay crowded?

The main Ha Long Bay route, including the big caves, is crowded in the late morning when day boats arrive. Overnight cruises reach quieter spots in the evening and early morning. Lan Ha Bay and Bai Tu Long Bay see far fewer boats throughout the day.

Do I need a visa to visit Ha Long Bay?

Most visitors need a Vietnam visa or a visa exemption, checked when they land in Vietnam, usually at Noi Bai in Hanoi. Read Do I need a visa for Vietnam? for your passport. Cruise operators also ask for your passport details when you book.
