Is Con Dao Heaven for Tourists in Vietnam? A Practical Island Guide

Is Con Dao heaven for tourists in Vietnam? Beaches, the prison museum, turtle season, how to get there from Saigon and the visa you need first.

How to apply Vietnam evisa

Calling Con Dao heaven for tourists in Vietnam is fair if you want quiet beaches, clear water and a heavy dose of history rather than nightlife. This guide from our Vietnam travel blog covers what to do on the islands, the best months to go, how to get there and the visa step that has to come first.

Con Dao has no international flights, so foreign visitors enter Vietnam at a mainland airport first. If your passport is not visa-free, you can apply for a Vietnam e-visa online before you book the island leg. This Con Dao travel guide starts with the facts that shape a trip.

Con Dao at a glance:

Topic What to know
Location Archipelago off Vietnam's south coast, part of Ho Chi Minh City since July 2025
Main island Con Son, home to the town, the airport and most hotels
Calm-sea season March to September
Turtle nesting May to September
Access Domestic flights from Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho, or a speedboat

Is Con Dao heaven for tourists in Vietnam?

Yes, for travelers who value nature and calm over crowds. Most of the archipelago sits inside Con Dao National Park, and the former prison gives the islands real historical weight. If you want bars and shopping, Phu Quoc suits you better.

Con Son, the main Con Dao island, holds the town, the airport and most places to stay. Since July 1, 2025, Con Dao has been a special zone of Ho Chi Minh City, planned around low-impact island tourism.

Best things to do on Con Dao

Con Dao offers three kinds of days: beaches and reefs, history, and in season a night on a turtle island.

Beaches and snorkeling

Con Dao's beaches are the main draw for anyone who wants sand without crowds. Vietnam's national tourism site points to Dam Trau, Ong Dung and Dat Doc. Boat trips take snorkelers and divers to the outer islets for the best reefs.

Prison history and the museum

The prison complex is why Con Dao was once called "hell on earth". French colonial authorities and later the Saigon government held political prisoners here, and Phu Hai prison is open to visitors.

Start at the newer Con Dao Museum for context, then visit Hang Duong cemetery, where many former prisoners are buried. Dress modestly and keep your voice down there.

Turtle watching in the national park

Turtle watching on Con Dao is a guided, regulated night out, not a beach stroll. Under a national park notice dated August 18, 2025, nesting visits run from 18:00 to 06:00 at sites such as Bay Canh and Hon Cau.

Each site takes no more than 50 visitors a night, in groups of about ten. You register through a tour operator and pay the park entrance fee. Hatchling releases happen at dawn.

Best time to visit Con Dao

March to September is the best time to visit Con Dao for calm seas, diving and turtles. From October to February, northeast winds push big waves onto the east-facing beaches, and October to December brings more rain.

Winter still works if you swim on the sheltered west and southwest shores and keep boat trips flexible.

How to get to Con Dao

You reach Con Dao by a short domestic flight or by speedboat from the Mekong Delta or Vung Tau. Flights land at Con Son airport, about 12 km from town, and the hop from Ho Chi Minh City is about 45 minutes. The table lists the main routes, fastest first; sea times come from the local tourism site condao.com.vn.

Con Dao routes:

Route Typical journey Notes
Flight from Ho Chi Minh City About 45 minutes Fastest; book early in summer
Speedboat from Vung Tau About 3 hours 45 minutes Daily, weather permitting
Speedboat from Can Tho 3 to 4 hours Leaves from Ninh Kieu pier
Speedboat from Tran De About 1 hour 45 minutes Shortest sea crossing

Boat schedules change by season and sailings stop in rough weather, so confirm times before you go.

Most international visitors land at Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City and connect to a domestic flight. For a tight connection, arrival fast track at Tan Son Nhat speeds you through immigration. Carry some cash on the island, because cards are patchy outside the resorts.

Visa and entry before you fly to Con Dao

Con Dao needs the same entry papers as anywhere in Vietnam. Your visa or visa exemption is checked at the international airport where you land, so sort it out before you fly.

Start by checking Do I need a visa for Vietnam? and the visa-free entry list for your passport. If you need a visa, the e-visa issued through evisa.gov.vn works at international airports, including Tan Son Nhat, and the government fee is $25 for single entry or $50 for multiple entry.

A visa on arrival also works if you fly into Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang or Cam Ranh with a pre-approved letter.

VietnamVisa-Easy.com is a private visa service operated by H2 Global Travel JSC since 2012, not a government website, and you can apply yourself at evisa.gov.vn for US$25. For a checked application at an all-in price from $47, start your application with us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fly directly to Con Dao from abroad?

No. Con Son airport only handles domestic flights, mainly from Ho Chi Minh City and Can Tho. International travelers clear immigration at a mainland airport such as Tan Son Nhat, then take a domestic flight or travel to a pier for the speedboat. Allow a few hours between flights.

How many days do you need in Con Dao?

Three or four nights suit most visitors. That leaves one day for the prison sites and museum, one or two for beaches and a snorkeling trip, and one evening for turtle watching in season. Add a spare day from October to February, when wind can cancel boats.

How do you get around Con Dao?

Renting a scooter is the most common way to get around Con Son, the main island. Taxis are available in town and some resorts run shuttles. Roads are quiet but winding along the coast, so ride slowly and avoid night riding if you are not used to it.

Do I need a visa to visit Con Dao?

You need a Vietnam visa or a visa exemption, the same as for the rest of the country. It is checked when you enter Vietnam at an international airport. An e-visa from evisa.gov.vn covers this. On the island, turtle watching also needs registration with the national park through a tour operator.
