International Hospitals in Vietnam: Where Foreigners Get Care

International hospitals in Vietnam for visitors: emergency numbers, hospitals and clinics in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, insurance and visa tips.

How to apply Vietnam evisa

International hospitals in Vietnam are concentrated in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, with English-speaking staff and experience with foreign insurance. In an emergency, call 115 for an ambulance or take a taxi straight to one of them. This guide from our Vietnam travel blog lists emergency numbers, well-known hospitals by city, how paying works, and what to do if treatment affects your visa or flight.

This is general travel information, not medical advice. Before you travel, buy insurance that covers hospital care and medical evacuation; if you still need a visa, apply for a Vietnam e-visa online so your entry is sorted too.

Emergency numbers in Vietnam

The emergency number in Vietnam for an ambulance is 115. Operators may speak little English, so ask a hotel or local person to call for you if you can.

Service Number
Ambulance 115
Police 113
Fire 114

In big cities, a taxi or Grab car to an international hospital is often faster than waiting for an ambulance in traffic. Save your hotel address and your insurer's emergency line in your phone.

International hospitals in Vietnam by city

Hospitals and clinics in Vietnam's main cities treat foreign patients daily, with English-speaking doctors and insurance desks. The names below are well known to travelers; services change, so check before you go.

The UK government's getting help page lists the emergency numbers and links to a directory of English-speaking professionals, and many embassies keep lists of medical facilities. Use them as your first reference.

Hanoi

For hospitals for foreigners in Hanoi, travelers most often use the Hanoi French Hospital, Vinmec International Hospital at Times City, and clinics such as Family Medical Practice and International SOS for non-urgent care. The French Hospital and Vinmec both run emergency departments.

Ho Chi Minh City

Among hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City, FV Hospital and Vinmec Central Park are the main choices for foreign patients, with Family Medical Practice clinics for general care. Traffic can make distances long, so choose the closest one in an emergency.

Da Nang

In Da Nang, Vinmec Da Nang, Hoan My Da Nang and Family Medical Practice Da Nang see many foreign patients. For serious cases in Hoi An or Hue, patients are usually transferred to Da Nang.

Paying and travel insurance

These hospitals usually ask for payment or a deposit before treatment, unless your insurer has a direct billing agreement with them. Call your insurer's emergency line as soon as possible.

Using travel insurance at a Vietnam hospital is easier if you carry your policy number and passport. Keep every receipt and medical report for a claim. Many policies exclude injuries from riding a motorbike without a valid license, as our Vietnam travel tips explain.

Pharmacies and minor problems

Pharmacies are everywhere in Vietnamese cities and sell many medicines over the counter. For stomach upsets, colds or minor cuts, a pharmacist or a clinic visit is usually enough.

Buy from established pharmacy chains rather than street kiosks, and bring enough of any prescription medicine for the whole trip, with the prescription. Two practical issues come up when treatment is longer than a few days: your visa and your flight home.

When treatment affects your trip

A hospital stay can collide with your visa end date or your flight. Here is how to handle both.

Your visa runs out during treatment

If treatment will keep you in Vietnam beyond your visa or visa-free days, contact the immigration authorities before the date passes, with a letter from the hospital. Ask your embassy for help.

If your passport is lost or stolen as well, follow our lost passport guide. For an e-visa you have not yet used, dates can sometimes be changed; we can correct an e-visa before travel.

Flying home after treatment

Airlines may ask for a fit-to-fly letter after surgery or serious illness. Ask the hospital for one in English, and check your airline's medical clearance rules. Your insurer may arrange the flight or an escort.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is healthcare good in Vietnam?

Healthcare for visitors is good at the international hospitals and clinics in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, with modern equipment and English-speaking staff. Rural and island facilities are basic, so serious cases are transferred to a city. Travel insurance with evacuation cover is essential.

Do doctors in Vietnam speak English?

Doctors and staff at international hospitals and clinics usually speak English, and some speak French or other languages. In public hospitals and outside the main cities, English is limited, so bring a translation app or ask your hotel to help arrange care.

Should I get vaccines before visiting Vietnam?

Ask a travel health clinic or your doctor six to eight weeks before your trip. Advice depends on your health, the season and where you will travel, such as rural areas or long stays. Your country's travel health service lists current recommendations for Vietnam.

Do I need travel insurance for Vietnam?

Travel insurance is not required for most tourist visas, but you should have it. Private hospitals ask for payment or a deposit before treatment, and medical evacuation can be very expensive. Choose a policy that covers hospital care, evacuation and any activities you plan.
