Why Travelers Call Ninh Thuan a Land of Sunlight and Winds
Why is Ninh Thuan a land of sunlight and winds? Dunes, Cham towers, Vinh Hy Bay, the best months to go and how to arrive via Cam Ranh airport.
Vietnamese travelers call Ninh Thuan a land of sunlight and winds because it is the driest, sunniest stretch of the country's coast, and that harsh climate shaped everything worth seeing there. This post from our Vietnam travel blog explains where the nickname comes from, then covers the sand dunes, Cham towers and bays, the best months to go, how to get there and the entry papers you need.
The region sits between Nha Trang and Mui Ne, and the nearest international airport is Cam Ranh. If your passport is not visa-free, you can apply for a Vietnam e-visa online before you book flights. This Ninh Thuan travel guide starts with the basics.

Why is Ninh Thuan a land of sunlight and winds?
Ninh Thuan earns the name through climate. It is the driest part of Vietnam, and Viet Nam News puts its sunshine at about 2,700 hours a year, against a national average of around 1,700. Strong, steady winds blow for most of the year.
People in Phan Rang joke about it with a local saying: wind like whips, sun like ovens. The same conditions explain why the hills are covered in wind turbines and solar farms, why salt can be harvested along the coast, and why grapes grow here when they struggle in most of tropical Vietnam. For visitors, that means clear skies most days and a landscape closer to semi-desert than rice country.
Things to do in Ninh Thuan
Things to do in Ninh Thuan fall into four groups: dunes and salt fields, Cham culture, the coast and national park, and the farms that do well in the heat. Two or three days covers the highlights.
Nam Cuong sand dunes and the salt fields
The Nam Cuong dunes are often called a miniature desert, and the wind reshapes their surface every night. Vietnam's national tourism site recommends going between 5:00 and 7:00, when the light is soft and the sand is still cool.
The coastal roads around Phan Rang also pass white salt fields, where workers rake salt in the early morning.
Cham towers and Bau Truc pottery
Ninh Thuan is the heartland of Vietnam's Cham people, and their culture is the region's deepest draw. Po Klong Garai, about 7 km from the town center, is a well-preserved group of Cham brick towers and the main venue for the Kate festival, which marks the Cham new year.
About 10 km from town, Bau Truc village still makes pottery by hand, without a potter's wheel. The art of Cham pottery making was added to UNESCO's urgent safeguarding list in November 2022.
Vinh Hy Bay and Nui Chua National Park
The coast north of Phan Rang mixes dry mountains with clear water. Vinh Hy Bay is the best-known stop, with glass-bottom boat trips over coral and fish.
Nui Chua National Park, about 30 minutes from town, became a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 2021. It is home to red-shanked douc langurs, and the classic multi-day trek needs advance registration with the park management board.
Vineyards, sheep and local food
Grapes, apples and sheep do well in the dry heat. Vineyards line the road toward Nha Trang, and Cham shepherds lead flocks of sheep to the hills around 8:00 in the morning. For food, try banh can, small rice-flour pancakes cooked in clay molds, and banh canh with fish cake. Both are easy to find in Phan Rang.
Best time to visit Ninh Thuan
May to August is the best time to visit Ninh Thuan for beaches, with dry weather and smaller crowds. Late September to October suits culture, when the Kate festival usually takes place at the Cham towers. It is hot all year, so sightsee early or late and bring sun protection.
How to get to Ninh Thuan
Most international travelers reach Ninh Thuan through Cam Ranh International Airport, then drive about 70 km south to Phan Rang. The town is also on the main north to south railway at Thap Cham station and on National Highway 1.
Routes to Phan Rang:
| From | How | Typical journey |
|---|---|---|
| Cam Ranh airport (CXR) | Taxi or private car | About 1 hour |
| Nha Trang | Bus or car | About 2 hours |
| Ho Chi Minh City | Train to Thap Cham, or bus | Bus about 5 to 6 hours |

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Ninh Thuan still a province?
No. Since July 1, 2025, Ninh Thuan has been part of an enlarged Khanh Hoa province, with its administrative center in Nha Trang. Phan Rang-Thap Cham is no longer a provincial capital, but travelers and locals still use the name Ninh Thuan for the area, and the attractions are unchanged.
When is the Kate festival held?
The Kate festival follows the Cham calendar, so the date moves each year, usually falling in late September or October. The main celebrations take place at Po Klong Garai and other Cham towers around Phan Rang. Check local tourism announcements a few weeks ahead to confirm the dates before you book.
How many days do you need in Ninh Thuan?
Two to three days suit most visitors. Spend one sunrise at the Nam Cuong dunes and the salt fields, one day on Cham towers and Bau Truc pottery, and one on the coastal road to Vinh Hy Bay and Nui Chua. Add a day if you plan to trek in the national park.
Can I visit Ninh Thuan on a day trip from Nha Trang?
Yes, a long day trip works if you start early. Phan Rang is about two hours from Nha Trang by road, and the coastal route past Vinh Hy Bay makes a scenic loop. A day trip will feel rushed for the dunes at sunrise, so an overnight stay gives you a better experience.
