Ninh Binh Travel Guide: Trang An, Tam Coc and Hang Mua

Ninh Binh travel guide: Trang An or Tam Coc boat trips, the Hang Mua viewpoint, Bai Dinh and Hoa Lu, day trip or overnight, and getting there from Hanoi.

How to apply Vietnam evisa

This Ninh Binh travel guide covers the limestone country about two hours south of Hanoi, where rowing boats glide through caves and rice fields. From our Vietnam travel blog, it compares the two boat trips, Trang An and Tam Coc, then covers the Hang Mua viewpoint, temples, getting there, the best months and whether to stay overnight.

Ninh Binh is the most popular trip out of Hanoi, so it often shares a visa plan with the capital. If you need one, apply for a Vietnam e-visa online before your flight to Noi Bai.

Ninh Binh at a glance:

Topic What to know
From Hanoi About 2 hours by road, about 2.5 hours by train
Main boat trips Trang An (UNESCO) or Tam Coc
Must-see viewpoint Hang Mua, about 500 steps
Best months Late May to early June for golden rice, September to November for mild weather
Time needed 1 night is better than a day trip

Trang An or Tam Coc

Choose Trang An for the longer, quieter boat trip through caves and temples inside a UNESCO site; choose Tam Coc for the rice-field scenery, best around harvest. Both are rowed by local boat crews, often with their feet.

Trang An Tam Coc
Boat trip About 2 to 3 hours, several caves and temples About 1.5 to 2 hours, three caves
Scenery Karst towers, river, temples Rice fields along the Ngo Dong river
Crowds Busy but well organized Busy, with snack sellers on the water
Best season All year Late May to early June, when rice is golden

Trang An is part of the Trang An Landscape Complex, listed by UNESCO in 2014 for both its karst scenery and its archaeological caves.

Hang Mua and other viewpoints

Hang Mua is a steep stone stairway of about 500 steps to a dragon statue and pagoda on top of a limestone peak, with the best view in Ninh Binh. Climb early in the morning or at sunset to avoid the midday heat.

The view looks over the Tam Coc river and rice fields toward Trang An. For quieter scenery, Van Long nature reserve offers bamboo boat trips on a still lagoon, with a chance of seeing rare langurs on the cliffs. Thung Nham bird park fills with returning birds at dusk.

Temples and the ancient capital

Ninh Binh was Vietnam's capital in the 10th century, and the region mixes ancient temples with very new ones. Hoa Lu, the old capital, has temples to the Dinh and Le kings in a quiet valley.

Bai Dinh pagoda, by contrast, is a huge modern Buddhist complex with long corridors of statues and a tall bell tower. It is impressive in scale but busy with pilgrims and electric carts; visit early or skip it if you prefer older sites.

Getting from Hanoi to Ninh Binh

The trip from Hanoi to Ninh Binh takes about two hours by road on the expressway or about two and a half hours by train. Many visitors join a day tour that includes transport, boat tickets and lunch.

Independent travelers can take a limousine minibus from the Old Quarter or a train from Hanoi Railway Station, then rent a bicycle or motorbike in Tam Coc. Our Hanoi guide covers the city days before and after.

Best time to visit Ninh Binh

Late May to early June is the best time to visit Ninh Binh for golden rice fields around Tam Coc. September to November brings mild, dry weather and a second, smaller harvest in some areas.

Winter, from December to February, is cool and often misty, which suits photographs but makes boat trips chilly. July and August are hot, with heavy rain at times. Trang An works all year, because its scenery does not depend on the rice.

Day trip or overnight

A day trip from Hanoi covers Trang An or Tam Coc and Hang Mua in about 10 to 12 hours. Staying one night lets you take the boats early, before tour groups arrive, and climb Hang Mua at sunset.

Day Morning Afternoon Evening
1 Arrive from Hanoi, Hoa Lu temples Tam Coc boat or cycling in the fields Hang Mua at sunset
2 Trang An boats at opening time Van Long or Bai Dinh Return to Hanoi

Ninh Binh works as an alternative to a cruise if you do not like boats overnight; our Ha Long Bay guide compares the two. Two extras are worth knowing: continuing south to Pu Luong, and the film sets.

Ninh Binh travel guide extras

Ninh Binh is also a stepping stone to quieter mountains and a draw for film fans. Both are below.

Further south to Pu Luong

Pu Luong nature reserve, a few hours southwest, has rice terraces and stilt-house villages with far fewer visitors. Our Pu Luong guide explains how to spend two nights there after Ninh Binh.

Film locations

Parts of Kong: Skull Island were filmed in Ninh Binh in 2016, and a replica of the film's native village was built in Trang An. Boat routes in Trang An pass the set, which makes a fun stop for film fans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ninh Binh worth visiting?

Yes. Ninh Binh is worth visiting for karst scenery similar to Ha Long Bay but on rivers and rice fields, within two hours of Hanoi. It suits travelers who prefer rowing boats, cycling and viewpoints to an overnight cruise, and it fits easily into a first trip to northern Vietnam.

How long is the Trang An boat trip?

The Trang An boat trip lasts about two to three hours, depending on the route you choose at the pier. Each route passes through several caves and stops at riverside temples. Bring a hat and water, as most boats have no shade, and go early for cooler weather.

Can you cycle around Ninh Binh?

Yes. Cycling is one of the best ways to see Ninh Binh, especially the flat lanes around Tam Coc and Hang Mua. Most guesthouses lend or rent bicycles, and the main sights are within about 10 km of each other. Avoid the main highways and ride early on hot days.

Do I need a visa to visit Ninh Binh?

Most visitors need a Vietnam visa or a visa exemption, checked when they land in Hanoi or another international airport. Read Do I need a visa for Vietnam? for your passport. An e-visa covers Ninh Binh and the rest of the country for up to 90 days.
