Hue Travel Guide: The Imperial City, Royal Tombs and 2-Day Plan
Hue travel guide: the Imperial City, which royal tombs to choose, Thien Mu Pagoda, Hue food, the best months and getting there over the Hai Van Pass.
This Hue travel guide fits Vietnam's former imperial capital into two days: the Imperial City on the first morning, two royal tombs on the second, and Thien Mu Pagoda and the Perfume River in between. From our Vietnam travel blog, it also covers food, the best months, and getting there from Hoi An or by air.
Hue was the seat of the Nguyen dynasty from 1802 to 1945, and its monuments are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Phu Bai airport accepts the e-visa; if you need one, apply for a Vietnam e-visa online and choose your entry airport.
Hue at a glance:
| Topic | What to know |
|---|---|
| Time needed | 2 days |
| Best months | February to April |
| Flood risk | October and November |
| Airport | Phu Bai, about 30 minutes from the center |
| From Hoi An | About 3 hours by car over the Hai Van Pass |
The Hue Imperial City
The Hue Imperial City is the walled palace complex of the Nguyen emperors, inside the larger Citadel on the north bank of the Perfume River. It is the heart of the Complex of Hue Monuments, listed by UNESCO in 1993.
Enter through the Ngo Mon Gate, then walk through the throne hall courtyards to the Forbidden Purple City, where the emperor lived. Much was destroyed in 1968 and restoration continues, so some areas are open lawns with foundations. Allow three hours, start at opening time, and carry water: there is little shade.
Which Hue royal tombs to visit
Seven royal tombs lie along the Perfume River south of the city, but two are enough for most visitors. Choose by style.
| Tomb | Style | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Minh Mang | Classic, symmetrical, lakes and pavilions | Architecture and calm |
| Tu Duc | Poetic garden with a lake, built as a retreat | Gardens and photography |
| Khai Dinh | Hillside concrete tomb with glass and porcelain mosaics | A striking interior |
Minh Mang and Khai Dinh make the best contrast: one traditional, one a mix of European and Vietnamese styles. Go before 9:30 to beat the tour groups. A combined ticket for the Imperial City and several tombs is sold at the sites.
Thien Mu Pagoda and the Perfume River
Thien Mu Pagoda, with its seven-story octagonal tower on a hill above the Perfume River, is Hue's best-known landmark. It is still an active monastery, so dress modestly.
Combine it with a slow boat trip on the Perfume River, which can drop you at Thien Mu and some tombs. In the evening, the riverside walking streets on the south bank fill with locals.
What to eat in Hue
Hue has its own royal and street cuisine, spicier than the rest of the country. Bun bo Hue, a lemongrass beef noodle soup, is the dish to try first.
Also look for banh khoai, a crispy pancake, small steamed rice cakes such as banh beo, and com hen, rice with baby clams. Dong Ba Market, near the Citadel, is a good place to start.
Best time to visit Hue
February to April is the best time to visit Hue, with mild temperatures and little rain. May to August is hot and dry, good for sightseeing early and late.
From September to December, Hue gets heavy rain, and October and November bring the highest risk of floods along the Perfume River. If you travel then, keep a spare day and stay on higher ground away from the river.
How many days in Hue
Two days covers Hue comfortably: the Imperial City and Thien Mu on day one, two tombs and the river on day two. One day is possible if you hire a car to link the citadel and two tombs.
| Day | Morning | Afternoon | Evening |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Imperial City and Forbidden Purple City | Thien Mu Pagoda, Perfume River boat | Bun bo Hue, south-bank walking streets |
| 2 | Minh Mang tomb | Khai Dinh tomb | Dong Ba Market area |
Hue often sits in the middle of a longer trip, like our two-week itinerary. That raises two practical questions: how to travel from Hoi An, and which airport to use.
Hue travel guide logistics
Hue is easy to reach by road from the south and by air from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City. The airport you choose matters for your visa.
Hoi An to Hue over the Hai Van Pass
The road from Hoi An to Hue takes about three hours by car with stops, over the Hai Van Pass and past Lang Co beach. Hire a private car or join a motorbike tour for the views; the tunnel is faster but skips the scenery. Our Hoi An travel guide and Da Nang guide cover the southern end.
Flying into Hue or Da Nang
Phu Bai airport is one of the airports that accept the Vietnam e-visa, as our list of e-visa airports shows, but it is not one of the four airports where a visa on arrival letter can be used. If you plan to use visa on arrival in central Vietnam, fly into Da Nang and drive north.
VietnamVisa-Easy.com is a private visa service operated by H2 Global Travel JSC since 2012, not a government website, and you can apply directly at evisa.gov.vn for US$25. If you would like your entry airport checked before submission, start your application with us.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Hue worth visiting?
Yes, Hue is worth visiting if you are interested in history. It is the only place in Vietnam with an imperial palace and royal tombs on this scale, and the Perfume River setting is calm compared with Hanoi or Saigon. Beach-focused travelers can treat it as a two-day stop between Hanoi and Hoi An.
Where should I stay in Hue?
Most visitors stay on the south bank of the Perfume River, close to restaurants, the walking streets and the bridges to the Citadel. Riverside hotels have the best views. In the October to November flood season, choose a hotel on higher ground and check its flood record in reviews.
Is there a combined ticket for Hue's sites?
Yes. The Hue monuments office sells combined tickets that cover the Imperial City and several royal tombs, which work out cheaper than separate tickets. Buy them at the Imperial City or tomb ticket offices, and keep the ticket with you, because each site checks it.
Do I need a visa to visit Hue?
Most visitors need a Vietnam visa or a visa exemption, checked at their first international airport or border gate. Read Do I need a visa for Vietnam? for your passport. An e-visa covers Hue and works at Phu Bai airport if you fly in directly.
