Things to Do in Nha Trang: Islands, Beaches and Cham Towers

Things to do in Nha Trang: island trips, diving, Po Nagar towers, mud baths and quiet beaches, plus the best months and the ride from Cam Ranh airport.

How to apply Vietnam evisa

The best things to do in Nha Trang are on and under the water: island boat trips, snorkeling and diving in the bay. On land, visit the Po Nagar Cham Towers, soak in a mud bath and escape to quieter beaches north and south of the city. This guide from our Vietnam travel blog covers each, plus the best months, getting there from Cam Ranh airport and a three-day plan.

Nha Trang is a city beach resort with high-rise hotels along a long sandy bay, so this Nha Trang travel guide also points to calmer places nearby. Cam Ranh airport takes international flights; if you need a visa, apply for a Vietnam e-visa online and choose Cam Ranh as your entry point.

Things to do in Nha Trang on the water

Nha Trang Bay holds about 19 islands, and most days here revolve around a boat. Choose a trip that matches your style before booking, because the same islands are visited by quiet snorkeling tours and loud party boats.

Island hopping in Nha Trang Bay

Island hopping in Nha Trang Bay usually means a day boat to three or four islands. Hon Mun, inside a marine protected area, has the best snorkeling; Hon Tam and Hon Mot are for swimming and lazing. Hon Tre, the largest island, holds the Vinpearl resort and theme park.

Ask the operator about group size and whether drinks and music are part of the day. Boats leave from the harbor south of the center in the morning and return mid-afternoon.

Diving and snorkeling

Nha Trang is one of Vietnam's main dive centers, with dive shops running trips to sites around Hon Mun. Visibility is usually best from about April to August, when the sea is calmest. Beginners can do a discovery dive; certified divers can book two-dive days. Check that the shop is affiliated with a recognized dive training organization.

Culture and wellness in town

Two cultural sites and a mud bath fill the hottest hours. The Po Nagar Cham Towers, on a hill north of the river, are brick temples built by the Champa kingdom and still used for worship by local people. Dress modestly and go early.

Long Son Pagoda, west of the center, has a large white Buddha reached by a stairway, with views over the city. For a lazy afternoon, the hot spring centers north of town offer mineral mud baths followed by warm pools; our guide to mud baths in Vietnam compares them. In the evening, walk the beachfront promenade and eat seafood at the night market.

Quieter beaches north and south

If the city beach feels crowded, the coast north and south of Nha Trang has long, emptier beaches. Doc Let, about an hour north, has white sand and calm water. Bai Dai, the long beach between the city and Cam Ranh airport, has resorts and seafood shacks.

Further north, Whale Island is a small island resort known for diving. These spots work as a day trip by car or as a calmer place to stay for the last nights before your flight.

Best time to visit Nha Trang

February to August is the best time to visit Nha Trang, with dry weather and calm seas. September to December is the rainy season, and October and November bring the heaviest rain and rough seas.

In the rainy months, island boats and dive trips can be cancelled at short notice. If you travel then, keep the boat day flexible and plan the towers, pagoda and mud baths for wet days.

Getting from Cam Ranh airport to Nha Trang

Cam Ranh International Airport is about 30 to 35 km south of Nha Trang, and the drive along the coast takes 45 to 60 minutes. Grab, taxis, airport shuttle buses and pre-booked cars all make the trip.

A pre-booked airport transfer suits late flights and families with luggage, because the driver waits at arrivals at a fixed price per car. Trains on the north-south line also stop at Nha Trang station in the city center if you are coming overland.

Planning 3 days in Nha Trang

Three days gives you one boat day, one culture and wellness day, and one quieter beach day. Put the boat day first in case the weather forces a change.

Day Morning Afternoon Evening
1 Island trip or dive day Back by mid-afternoon Seafood on the promenade
2 Po Nagar Cham Towers, Long Son Pagoda Mud bath and hot springs Night market
3 Doc Let or Bai Dai beach Beach or pool Sunset drinks by the bay

Two practical points remain before you book: the visa for arriving at Cam Ranh, and whether to add a day trip south.

Before you go

Cam Ranh airport has its own entry rules, and the coast to the south has a quieter alternative to the city. Both are below.

Visa at Cam Ranh

Cam Ranh is one of four airports where a visa on arrival approval letter can be used, alongside Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang. It also accepts the e-visa. Evening arrivals from several cities can create queues, and airport fast track takes you through a priority lane.

Day trip south to Ninh Thuan

An hour or two south of Cam Ranh, Ninh Thuan has dry landscapes, sand dunes, vineyards and Cham villages that feel very different from Nha Trang. Our Ninh Thuan guide explains what to see on a day trip or overnight stay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Nha Trang worth visiting?

Nha Trang is worth visiting if you want a beach city with island trips, diving and easy logistics, including direct international flights to Cam Ranh. It is busier and more built up than Hoi An's An Bang or Phu Quoc's quieter coasts, so stay north or south of the center for a calmer trip.

Is Nha Trang good for families?

Yes. Nha Trang suits families: the city beach is long and sandy, the Vinpearl theme park on Hon Tre keeps children busy, and calm island trips offer easy snorkeling. Choose a family-oriented boat trip rather than a party cruise, and avoid the October to November storm period.

How many days do you need in Nha Trang?

Three days is enough for most visitors: one for an island trip or diving, one for the Cham towers, pagoda and mud baths, and one for a quieter beach. Add a day or two if you plan to dive several times or relax at a resort near Cam Ranh.

Do I need a visa to visit Nha Trang?

Most visitors need a Vietnam visa or a visa exemption, checked when they land at Cam Ranh or another international airport. Read Do I need a visa for Vietnam? for your passport. An e-visa or a visa on arrival letter both work at Cam Ranh for air arrivals.
