Hoi An Ancient town is situated 30 km from Danang city to the Southeast, 60 km from Tam Ky city to the Northeast.

Hoi An used to be international trading centre by sea on the Eastwest area in the 16th and 17th centuries. It was the busiest trading port in Dang Trong region of Vietnam under the reign of Nguyen where trading boats from Japan, China, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands… made trading mission.

Hoi An ancient town preserves almost integrally the vestige complex of ancient buildings including ancient houses, assembly halls, civil buildings, water wells, ports, markets religious structures and other non-religious worshiping structures. Hoi An is the only well-preserved example in Vietnam that is hard to find anywhere else in the world. It is regarded as living museum of traditional architecture and urban lifestyle.

Besides cultural values and diverse traditional architecture, Hoi An is a store of diverse intangible culture. The daily life of habitants with their customs and habits, religious activities, folk art, traditional handicraft villages, local specialties, festivals  are elements that draw a lot of domestic and international visitors to Hoi An every year.

According to statistics, Hoi An currently possesses 1,360 vestiges and landscapes. The vestige item is divided into 11 categories including: 1,068 ancient house, 19 pagodas, 44 burial mounts, 5 assembly halls, 43 temples, 11 ancient wells, 38 family temples, 23 communal houses. There are more than 1,100 vestiges in old quarter.

Hoi An ancient town was declared a world heritage site by UNESCO in December 1999.
