Phong Nha Caves: Which to Visit and How to Get There
Phong Nha caves guide: Paradise Cave and Phong Nha Cave on your own, Dark Cave and Son Doong on tours, getting there via Dong Hoi and when to avoid floods.
The Phong Nha caves lie in Phong Nha-Ke Bang national park in central Vietnam, home to some of the largest caves on Earth. Two of the most impressive, Paradise Cave and Phong Nha Cave, are easy to visit on your own; others, from Dark Cave to Son Doong, need a guided tour. This guide from our Vietnam travel blog compares them and explains how to get there and when to go.
The park is one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Vietnam, between Hanoi and Hue. If you need a visa, apply for a Vietnam e-visa online before you plan the trip.
Caves at a glance:
| Cave | Visit | Effort |
|---|---|---|
| Paradise Cave | On your own | Easy walkways, some stairs |
| Phong Nha Cave | On your own, by boat | Easy |
| Dark Cave | Guided activity | Zip line, swimming, mud |
| Hang En and other wild caves | Guided overnight tours | Hiking, camping |
| Son Doong | Multi-day caving trip | Very demanding, limited places |
Phong Nha caves you can visit on your own
Two caves are open to independent visitors with a ticket. Paradise Cave has about a kilometer of wooden walkways through huge chambers of stalactites, and arriving early, before tour groups, makes it far more impressive.
Phong Nha Cave is reached by boat along the Son river, then deeper inside along an underground river with lit formations. Both can be done in one day, and a small third cave, Tien Son, is above Phong Nha Cave.
Caves that need a tour
Several caves can only be visited with a licensed operator, for safety and conservation. They range from a half-day adventure to a multi-day caving trip.
Dark Cave
Dark Cave combines a zip line across the river, a swim to the entrance, a muddy passage where you float in the mud, and kayaking back. Bring swimwear and expect to get dirty.
Multi-day caving trips
Hang En, one of the world's largest cave entrances, is reached on overnight tours with camping on a beach inside. Son Doong, the largest known cave passage in the world, is visited only on multi-day caving trips with a licensed operator, with a limited number of places each year and fitness requirements. Book months ahead.
Getting to Phong Nha
Dong Hoi airport, about an hour's drive from the park, has domestic flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and is one of the airports where the Vietnam e-visa is accepted, as our list of e-visa airports shows. Dong Hoi is also on the north-south railway.
Phong Nha village, near the park entrance, has guesthouses, homestays and tour offices. Since the 2025 provincial merger, the park is part of Quang Tri province, though many maps still say Quang Binh.
Best time to visit
February to August is the best time to visit Phong Nha, with dry weather and calm rivers for boat trips. Summer is hot but good for Dark Cave and swimming.
From about September to December, heavy rain and floods can close caves and boat trips; October and November are the riskiest months. Two planning questions remain: how long to stay, and how to combine the trip with Hue.
Planning your stay
Phong Nha suits a short stay between the north and center. These points help you plan.
How many days
Two days covers Paradise Cave, Phong Nha Cave and Dark Cave. Add one or more days for overnight caving tours, cycling through the countryside or the botanical garden.
Combining with Hue
Hue is about four hours south by road or train, making Phong Nha an easy stop before or after the old capital; our Hue travel guide covers it. The DMZ sites lie between the two, covered in our guide to Vietnam War sites.
VietnamVisa-Easy.com is a private visa service operated by H2 Global Travel JSC since 2012, not a government website, and you can apply directly at evisa.gov.vn for US$25. If you would like your application checked first, start your application with us.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which cave is best in Phong Nha?
Paradise Cave is the best choice for most visitors: huge, beautifully lit chambers along easy walkways, open without a tour. For adventure, add Dark Cave. For a once-in-a-lifetime trip, multi-day caving trips to Hang En or Son Doong need advance booking and good fitness.
Can I visit Son Doong?
Yes, but only on a multi-day caving trip with the licensed operator, with a limited number of places each year, a fitness check and advance booking, often many months ahead. It involves jungle hiking, river crossings and camping inside the cave.
Are the caves suitable for children?
Paradise Cave and Phong Nha Cave suit families, with walkways, boats and lighting, though Paradise Cave has stairs. Dark Cave and overnight tours have age limits and need confidence in water and mud. Check each operator's rules.
Do I need a visa to visit Phong Nha?
Most visitors need a Vietnam visa or a visa exemption, checked at their first international airport. Read Do I need a visa for Vietnam? for your passport. An e-visa also works for flights into Dong Hoi.
