Tan Son Nhat Airport to District 1: Grab, Taxi, Bus or Private Car
Tan Son Nhat airport to District 1 by Grab, taxi, bus 109 or private car: which terminal you land at, pickup points, travel times and how to avoid scams.
Getting from Tan Son Nhat airport to District 1 takes about 30 minutes by car outside rush hour, by Grab, a taxi from the rank or a pre-booked private car; bus 109 is the cheap, slower option. This guide from our Vietnam travel blog starts with the terminal you land at, then compares each option and explains which suits your arrival time.
The airport sits inside the city, so the trip from Saigon airport to the city center is short; the queue at immigration is often the longest part. If you still need a visa, apply for a Vietnam e-visa online before you fly.
Tan Son Nhat to the center at a glance:
| Option | Price | Pickup | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grab car | Upfront fare in the app | Ride-hailing pickup area | Travelers with mobile data |
| Taxi | Meter | Taxi rank outside arrivals | No data, late arrivals |
| Bus 109 | Cheapest, cash on board | Bus stop outside the terminal | Light bags, daytime |
| Private transfer | From $25 per car | Driver waits at arrivals | Families, groups, late flights |
Which terminal you land at
Tan Son Nhat Terminal 2 handles international flights, so most overseas visitors arrive there. Terminal 1 and the newer Terminal 3 handle domestic flights, and a free shuttle links the terminals.
This matters for pickups: give your driver or the Grab app the right terminal. If you connect to a domestic flight to Phu Quoc, Da Nang or Hanoi, check which terminal your onward flight leaves from before you clear immigration.
Grab from Tan Son Nhat
Grab from Tan Son Nhat is the easiest door-to-door option if your phone has data. You see the fare before you book, pay by card or cash, and meet the driver at the ride-hailing pickup area shown in the app.
Install the app and add a card before you fly. Check the plate and the driver's name in the app before getting in, and ignore people in the arrivals hall who offer "Grab" rides without a booking. Fares rise at rush hour and in heavy rain.
Taxis at Saigon airport
A Ho Chi Minh airport taxi is fine if you take one from the marked rank outside arrivals and the meter runs. Avoid drivers who approach you inside the terminal.
Confirm the meter is on as you pull away, and have your hotel address written down or on a map, because many drivers speak little English. Keep small notes: a 500,000 VND note for a short ride often leads to "no change". Airport pickups can add a small parking charge to the fare.
Bus 109 and city buses
Bus 109 runs from Saigon airport to the city center, ending near 23/9 Park beside the backpacker area, and costs less than one US dollar. It suits travelers with light bags who arrive during the day.
The stop is outside the terminal; pay on board in cash. The ride takes longer than a car because of stops and traffic. City bus 152 also serves the airport but is slower. With large suitcases, a car is worth the extra cost.
Private car transfer
A private airport transfer means a driver waits at arrivals with your name, at a fixed price per car agreed before you land. Ours starts from $25 per car, and pickups from 21:00 to 5:59 Vietnam time cost a little more.
Prices last checked: 2026-10-13. The price is per car, not per person, so a family pays the same as a solo traveler. Book a private airport transfer with your flight number so the driver tracks delays. We run the same service in Hanoi; our Hanoi airport guide compares the options there.
Tan Son Nhat airport to District 1 by arrival time
Your best option depends on when you land and what you carry. By day, Grab or bus 109 work well; late at night or with children, a car that is already waiting saves effort.
| Landing time | Best option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Daytime, light bags | Bus 109 or Grab | Cheap, frequent |
| Rush hour (around 7:00 to 9:00 and 16:30 to 19:00) | Grab or transfer | Same traffic, but door to door |
| Late evening or after midnight | Private transfer or taxi rank | Fewer buses, tired travelers |
| Any time with children or big bags | Private transfer | Driver helps with luggage |
Before any of these, you still have to pass immigration and get dong and a SIM card, which the next part covers.
Before you leave the airport
Two tasks at Terminal 2 make the ride into town smoother. Both happen between landing and meeting your car or bus.
Faster immigration
Arrival queues at Tan Son Nhat are longest when several long-haul flights land together. The free pre-arrival form, filled in online before you fly, helps, and Tan Son Nhat fast track adds an escort through the formalities for $35 per passenger.
Cash and SIM
Withdraw dong from a bank ATM in the arrivals hall for buses and taxis, and buy a local SIM at the counters there; staff register it with your passport. With data on, Grab works before you reach the exit.

How far is Tan Son Nhat airport from District 1?
Tan Son Nhat sits inside Ho Chi Minh City, and the drive to the old District 1 center usually takes about 30 minutes outside rush hour. At peak times and in heavy rain it can take an hour. Bus 109 takes longer because of its stops.
Is District 1 still used as an address?
Locals, drivers and maps still say District 1, but since July 2025 Ho Chi Minh City no longer uses districts as an administrative level, and addresses use ward names such as Ben Thanh or Saigon ward. Give drivers the street name and number, or share a map pin.
Is it easy to find Grab at Tan Son Nhat?
Yes. The Grab app shows the pickup area for your terminal and the driver's plate number. Follow the signs to the ride-hailing pickup point after arrivals, and do not accept unbooked offers in the hall. Without mobile data, use the taxi rank or a pre-booked transfer instead.
Do I need a visa before landing in Ho Chi Minh City?
Most visitors need a Vietnam visa or a visa exemption before they board, checked at Tan Son Nhat immigration. Read Do I need a visa for Vietnam? for your passport, and apply for an e-visa at least a week before you fly to leave time for any correction.
